A basic business website in India costs a few thousand rupees to build yourself, ₹10,000–₹60,000 through a freelancer, and ₹40,000–₹1,50,000 through an agency. Then a yearly run cost follows whichever route you take: domain, hosting, SSL, and upkeep. This guide separates the one-time build from the recurring bill and prices all three routes in rupees.

What a Website Costs in India: The Short Answer

Most quotes answer the wrong question. They price the build and stay quiet about what the site costs to keep running. The table below does both, using published freelancer, agency, and hosting pricing checked in September 2026. Figures exclude GST.

Cost lineDo it yourselfFreelancerAgency
Domain (yearly)₹700 – ₹1,100₹700 – ₹1,100₹700 – ₹1,100
Hosting (yearly)₹1,000 – ₹6,000₹1,000 – ₹6,000₹3,000 – ₹12,000
SSL certificate (yearly)₹0₹0₹0
Design and development (one-time)₹0 – ₹5,000 for a theme₹10,000 – ₹60,000₹40,000 – ₹1,50,000
Content writing (one-time)your time₹500 – ₹3,000 per pageusually included
Maintenance (yearly)your time₹6,000 – ₹36,000₹12,000 – ₹1,20,000
First-year total₹2,000 – ₹12,000₹20,000 – ₹1,20,000₹55,000 – ₹2,75,000

Two things stand out. First, the spread inside each column is wider than the gap between columns, because a five-page brochure site and a fifty-product store are different jobs even from the same builder. Second, the yearly lines survive long after the build is paid for, so they deserve more attention than they usually get.

Read the totals as first-year figures. From year two, the build cost disappears and only the yearly lines remain, which is where the DIY and freelancer routes pull far ahead of an agency retainer.

One-time costs versus yearly costs

Every website cost falls into one of two buckets, and the distinction matters more than any single number. One-time costs are paid to make the site exist: design, development, initial content, setup. Yearly costs are paid to keep it existing: the domain, hosting, SSL, email, and whatever maintenance the site needs.

Quotes tend to bundle the two, or to mention only the first. Consequently many owners discover the yearly bill when a renewal notice arrives. Ask for the two buckets separately before comparing any quotes, and the comparison becomes far easier.

The Yearly Costs Every Website Carries

Whether you build it yourself or hire a team, four costs recur every year. None is large on its own. Together they set the floor for what the site costs to keep online.

The domain

A .in or .com domain costs ₹700 to ₹1,100 a year at renewal, though first-year offers run far lower. Many hosting plans include the first year free, so the renewal is the figure to budget. Our guide to .in domain registration covers the price, the verification rules, and who can register. You can see register-and-renew prices side by side on our domains page.

Hosting

Hosting is the one yearly line with real variation, from about ₹1,000 a year for a small shared plan to well beyond ₹12,000 for managed or VPS tiers. The advertised rate is usually an introductory price, and renewals run higher. We cover the full picture — price bands, the renewal jump, GST, and how to compare plans — in our guide to web hosting price in India, so this article treats it as a single line and moves on.

SSL and email

SSL should cost nothing. Free certificates are standard, and we include SSL on every plan, so any quote listing it as a paid yearly item deserves a question. Our SSL certificate guide explains what the certificate does and why paid versions rarely earn their price for a small site.

Email varies more. Most hosting plans include mailboxes at your domain, which covers a small business fully. A dedicated business suite costs extra per user, per year, and only makes sense once shared calendars and large storage matter.

Building It: DIY, Freelancer, or Agency

Who builds the site moves the price more than what the site does. The same five-page business site can cost ₹2,000 or ₹1,50,000 depending on the route, and neither figure is wrong. They buy different things.

Do it yourself with a builder or WordPress

The cash cost is the lowest of the three and the time cost is the highest. A hosting plan, a domain, and a free or inexpensive theme get a presentable site online for a few thousand rupees. WordPress is the common choice, because free themes and a large plugin library cover most first-site needs without code.

The trade is your evenings. Expect to spend hours on layout, images, and copy, and expect the first version to look like a first version. For a portfolio, a local service page, or a project you want to test, that trade is often worth it. Our WordPress hosting starts at $2.49 a month, and the free hosting plan lets you build before you spend anything.

Hire a freelancer

Freelancers charge ₹500 to ₹2,000 an hour in India, or ₹10,000 to ₹60,000 for a complete small business site. That buys a competent build on a theme, basic mobile responsiveness, and a contact form. It rarely buys custom design, written content, or support after launch unless you ask for each one explicitly.

Two failure points recur. The first is ownership: confirm the domain, the hosting account, and the site files sit in your name, not the freelancer’s. The second is continuity, since a solo builder can become unreachable once the invoice is paid. Both are solved by a written scope and by holding your own logins from day one.

Hire an agency

Agencies charge ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000 for the same small business site, with metro firms in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru running 25 to 50 percent above tier-two cities. The premium buys a process: a designer, a developer, testing, revision rounds, and someone accountable after launch.

That is worth paying for when the site carries real business weight, needs integrations, or will grow. It is rarely worth paying for a brochure site that will not change for two years. Ask what the maintenance retainer actually contains, because a retainer with no listed deliverables is a subscription to nothing.

Website or Web App? The Fork That Changes the Price

Two quotes for “a website” can differ by fifty times, and the reason is usually that they describe different products. Before comparing numbers, place your project on this ladder.

What you are buildingTypical build costSensible route
Brochure site (5–10 pages, contact form)₹0 – ₹40,000DIY or freelancer
Blog or content site₹0 – ₹30,000DIY on WordPress
Online store (catalogue, payments, shipping)₹50,000 – ₹5,00,000+Freelancer for small, agency for large
Portal with logins, bookings, or member areas₹1,00,000 – ₹5,00,000Agency
Custom application built to your process₹5,00,000 – ₹25,00,000+Agency or product team

The first two rows are websites. The last three are software that happens to run in a browser, and they are priced like software: by the logic you need built, not the pages you can see. A store with fifty products and a store with five thousand products differ mainly in catalogue, inventory, and logistics work, which is why the store row spans ten times.

Most Indian small businesses sit on the first row and get quoted for the third. Knowing which row you are on is the single best protection against overpaying.

What Pushes the Price Up

Within any row, five factors move the quote. Each one is a legitimate cost, and each one is also a place where a quote can quietly inflate.

Page count is the obvious one, though it matters less than people expect once the design system exists. Custom design matters far more: template customisation runs ₹15,000 to ₹50,000, while fully custom design starts near ₹1,00,000 and climbs well past ₹5,00,000. E-commerce adds a payment gateway, inventory, and order handling, none of which is trivial. Integrations with a CRM, a booking engine, or GST-compliant invoicing add hours, and hours are what you pay for.

Content is the factor most buyers forget. Someone has to write the pages, and professional copy costs ₹500 to ₹3,000 a page. Photography, if stock will not do, adds ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a shoot. Multilingual sites multiply the content cost by the number of languages, since translation is not free even when the template supports it.

Finally, location. A Jaipur or Pune agency with an equal portfolio will quote meaningfully below a Mumbai one, and the work travels perfectly well over a video call.

GST on Website Work

Website design and development is a service, and services attract 18% GST. The classification falls under SAC 998314, information technology design and development services, within the same heading 9983 that covers hosting. The rate is fixed by Notification 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate), as amended, and the September 2025 rationalisation left IT services at 18%.

In practice this means a ₹50,000 freelancer quote bills at ₹59,000 if the freelancer is GST-registered, and an agency quote almost always is. Ask whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive of tax before you compare it with another. A GST-registered business can generally claim input tax credit on the build, which brings the effective cost back to the pre-tax figure. Individuals and unregistered businesses absorb the full amount.

Two edge cases come up often. A freelancer below the registration threshold may not charge GST at all, which is legitimate but worth confirming on the invoice. And a GST-registered business hiring someone outside India accounts for the tax itself under reverse charge, so a foreign invoice with no GST line does not mean none is owed. Hosting carries its own 18%, covered in our hosting price guide rather than repeated here.

Where First-Time Buyers Overpay

The expensive mistakes are not exotic. They are the same five every time, and each one is a practice rather than a particular vendor.

Paying agency rates for a brochure site. A five-page site that will not change for two years does not need a project manager, a QA round, and a retainer. Match the route to the row on the ladder above, not to the confidence of the pitch.

Paying for SSL. Certificates from Let’s Encrypt are free, trusted by every browser, and included by most hosts. A yearly SSL line on a quote is either an outdated habit or padding.

Buying an SEO package with no deliverables. “SEO setup” without a list of what gets done — page titles, meta descriptions, sitemap, indexing — is a line item you cannot audit. Ask for the list. If there is no list, there is no work.

Letting the developer hold your hosting. Some builders resell hosting under their own account at a markup and keep the logins. That leaves you unable to move, unable to restore a backup, and unable to leave without their cooperation. Register the domain and the hosting in your own name, then grant the developer access. Our guide to migrating a website shows what moving involves when you do hold your own account.

Retainers that bill for nothing. A maintenance fee should buy specific things: updates applied, backups verified, uptime monitored, and a response time when something breaks. Our website backup strategies guide sets out what a real maintenance routine contains, which makes a hollow retainer easy to spot.

A Realistic First-Year Budget, Three Ways

Here are three complete first-year budgets built from the ranges above, GST included on every line that carries it, using September 2026 pricing. Each takes a typical mid-range figure rather than the cheapest or the dearest.

Personal blog (DIY)Small business site (freelancer)Small online store (agency)

Hosting₹1,500₹3,000₹8,000
Design and development₹0 (free theme)₹30,000₹1,20,000

Maintenanceyour time₹12,000₹36,000

First year with 18% GST₹2,831₹63,011₹1,94,581
First-year website cost path for a blog, business site and online store showing which costs recur

The second year tells the more useful story. The blog costs the same ₹2,831 again. The business site drops to about ₹18,761, because the build is paid for and only the domain, hosting, and maintenance recur. The store falls to roughly ₹52,981 for the same reason. Whichever route you take, the yearly figure is what you actually live with, and it is the figure to negotiate hardest.

Final Thoughts

Website cost in India splits into a build you pay once and a bill you pay every year. Price the yearly bill first, because it outlasts the build by a decade, and because it is where padded quotes hide. Then match the build route to what you are actually making: a brochure site does not need an agency, and an online store should not be trusted to the cheapest freelancer.

Keep three things in your own name regardless of who builds: the domain, the hosting account, and the site files. Everything else is replaceable.

FAQs

How much does a website cost in India?

A do-it-yourself site costs ₹2,000 to ₹12,000 in the first year, a freelancer-built business site ₹20,000 to ₹1,20,000, and an agency build ₹55,000 to ₹2,75,000, all before GST. The yearly run cost — domain, hosting, SSL, and maintenance — continues after the build is paid for. Figures reflect published pricing in September 2026.

How much does a 5-page website cost in India?

Built yourself on WordPress with a free theme, a few thousand rupees for hosting and a domain. From a freelancer, ₹10,000 to ₹60,000 depending on design and content. From an agency, ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000, with metro firms at the upper end. Add 18% GST to any registered builder’s quote.

How much does it cost to maintain a website per year in India?

Domain, hosting, and SSL together run roughly ₹2,000 to ₹13,000 a year for a small site. Maintenance on top ranges from nothing if you handle updates yourself to ₹6,000–₹36,000 with a freelancer or ₹12,000–₹1,20,000 on an agency retainer. Ask what a retainer includes before paying for one.

Is GST charged on website development in India?

Yes, at 18%. Design and development fall under SAC 998314 as IT services. A GST-registered freelancer or agency adds 18% to the quote, so ₹50,000 bills at ₹59,000. Freelancers below the registration threshold may not charge it, and registered businesses can generally claim input tax credit.

Can I build a website for free in India?

You can build one at zero cash cost using a free hosting tier, a free WordPress theme, and free SSL, paying only for the domain. The cost becomes your time and the limits of the free tier, which usually exclude backups and support. It works well for a portfolio or a project you are testing.

What is the difference between website cost and web hosting cost?

Website cost is everything it takes to build and run the site: design, development, content, domain, hosting, SSL, and maintenance. Web hosting cost is one line inside that: the yearly fee for the server space the site lives on. Our separate guide to web hosting price in India covers that line in detail.
